Nice article Alicia, well done!
Now I also felt, like you described that as a generalist you tend to be “inferior “ to specialists, who are fantastically good at one thing. Then I came across a great article (on Medium) by Raphael Sarandeses who considers himself to be a multipotentialite, which was a revelation for me. It’s a classic reframing exercise, because all of a sudden you are a MULTI potentialite (ie having multiple talents, areas of expertise, etc) as opposed to a MONOpotentialite, (the specialist). How’s that for flipping things around!
Then I also read a paragraph written by Robert Heinlein which is also a great booster for multipotentialites like us:
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyse a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
Specialization is for insects! Yay!
